Is your crypto exchange FIU-registered?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Reviewed against Income Tax Department text

Crypto exchanges serving Indian users must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) under anti-money-laundering law. Using a registered exchange is the simplest safety check you can do.

Why it matters

  • Registered exchanges must verify identity, monitor transactions and report suspicious activity under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
  • They deduct TDS and report your trades, which makes your ITR easier and avoids mismatches.
  • Unregistered platforms can be blocked in India, which can make it hard to access your money.

Where things stand

According to FIU-IND's annual report, 49 crypto service providers were registered as of March 2025: 45 based in India and 4 offshore. FIU-IND has penalised non-compliant platforms and in October 2025 issued notices to 25 offshore exchanges, including BingX, LBank, CoinW and Poloniex, for failing to register. Some large global exchanges, such as Binance, Coinbase and KuCoin, registered in order to keep serving Indian users.

How to check an exchange

  1. Look for an FIU-IND registration mention on the exchange's website footer, terms or app store listing.
  2. Search for the exchange name alongside "FIU-IND" in recent news from reputable outlets.
  3. Check FIU-IND press releases for exchanges that have been warned or blocked.
  4. If in doubt, don't deposit. There is no single public list published by FIU-IND, so be wary of any site claiming to be "the official list".

Registration is a compliance check, not a guarantee. It doesn't mean the government endorses the exchange or protects your deposits. Never keep more on any exchange than you can afford to lose.
